on the road to avtepe
I have been visiting a house in the village of Avtepe on and off for over 20 years, The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was a very isolated country for many years and I became increasingly fascinated in photographing local histories and eventually collated them as part of my Masters degree. The villagers living in Avtepe situated in the tiny almost penultimate village of the 'pan handle' North Cyprus have a collective memory of the events that have shaped their country's future. I am only interested in recording what I see; not what is remembered. I am photographing the here and now, whilst documenting a way of life that is inextricably moving forward with the past slowly disappearing leaving us with a perception of a memory. This book is a distillation of the everyday; a discourse of the otherness.
